ACEL Noticeboard

ACEL presents Dr. Mel Levineina's ACEL November 2009 Traveling Scholar

Professor Alma Harris is Pro-Director (Leadership) at the Institute of Education, London and Director of London Centre for Leadership in Learning. Her research work focuses on organisational change and development. She is internationally known for her work on school improvement, focusing particularly on improving schools in challenging circumstances. Her most recent work has focused on leadership and organisational change. Her latest book on distributed leadership is Distributed School Leadership: Developing Tomorrow’s Leaders (2008).

Tomorrow’s schools will need new forms of leadership. The old hierarchical models of leadership do not fit any longer. We need to develop new leaders at all levels of the system if we are serious about sustaining improvement and change. But how do we go about this? This workshop will give a practical insight into the why, how and what of distributed leadership by focusing on the research evidence and highlighting what it looks like in schools. The workshop will draw upon evidence about distributed leadership in other sectors from a research project that Alma has co-led with Professor Andy Hargreaves. It will also draw upon her experience of system wide reform in Wales where she is co-leading the development of professional learning communities across all schools.
